Today, The Calgary Party released its Transit Toolkit — the latest in a series of integrated, action-oriented solutions designed to tackle Calgary’s most pressing urban challenges: housing, public safety, and transit.
“Transit doesn’t exist in a vacuum,” said Brian Thiessen, Leader of The Calgary Party. “We can’t fix public transit without improving safety, addressing housing instability, and working with—not against—other levels of government. This toolkit is about building a transit system that respects riders, supports growth, and serves the whole city.”
The toolkit lays out a bold plan to make Calgary Transit safer, more reliable, more frequent, and easier to use — through expanded MAX and LRT service, station upgrades, safety by design, and a focus on equity across Calgary’s communities, not just downtown.
“We can’t do this without provincial and federal support,” added Thiessen. “But instead of partnership, the Smith government has delayed, interfered with, and undermined Calgary’s transit progress—especially the Green Line. That instability hurts investment, hurts growth, and hurts Calgarians. We need a clear plan for Green Line North and that must be a top priority for the next City Council.”
In 2024, Calgarians reported feeling least safe while using public transit according to the Calgary Police Commission's Community Perceptions Survey. Public transit also received one of the lowest satisfaction scores in the 2025 Spring Survey of Calgarians. These concerns are top of mind for Calgarians — and the Transit Toolkit delivers real, data-driven responses.
“We’ve heard loud and clear: Calgarians want a safe, usable, and future-ready transit system,” said Thiessen. “That means more visible safety personnel, better lighting and signage, and a system that makes all riders—especially women, youth, and seniors—feel safe at any time of day.”
The Toolkit calls for:
- Critical investments in the Green Line, including restoring the tunnelled downtown segment and planning the north leg to serve underserved communities;
- An airport connector from the Blue Line to YYC;
- More frequent service with 10-minute headways on MAX and LRT lines for 15 hours a day;
- System improvements like real-time arrival data, queue-jumps at intersections, and expanded on-demand service;
- Expanded safety features including more peace officers, CCTV, better lighting, and public help posts;
- Transit-oriented development to ensure growth and safety go hand in hand.
Importantly, Calgarians want this. The Calgary Party’s 2024 Budget Choice public engagement showed clear support for targeted investments in transit, public safety, fire response, and affordable housing — all of which are tightly connected in this plan.
The Calgary Party is calling for a stable, solutions-focused approach that puts riders first, builds for the future, and keeps Calgary moving — safely and sustainably.
